John Martin’s | The Big Store

OUR STORY

OUR STORY IS A MULTI-LAYERED STORY.

Firstly, it is about people, the many different people connected to the John Martin’s legacy. Some worked on the bustling floors of Johnnies, some shopped there, some managed the store, and some have passed their stories and treasured memories down through generations.

It is also a story shaped by extraordinary moments, including Adelaide’s unforgettable brush with Beatlemania. When John Martin’s played a pivotal role in bringing the Beatles to Adelaide, the city experienced one of the most historic visits in Australian musical history. That moment connected a local department store to a global phenomenon, adding another rich layer to the Johnnies story.

Beyond the people and the events, our documentary explores what remains. What still moves us? Why do we hold onto memories of a department store that closed almost 30 years ago? And what does this say about the way places shape us, long after they’re gone?

John Martin’s | The Big Store is a South Australian story with roots that stretch across state borders and reach far beyond Australia’s shores. It’s a story about community, nostalgia, and the enduring power of shared experience.
